a, 창세 전 언약
Foreknowledge
Galatians 3:8
"The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith,
preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, ‘All the nations shall be blessed in you.’"
★Meaning of “foreknowledge”:
Foreknowledge (Greek ‘prognosis’ = a compound of ‘pro’ (before) and ‘gnosis’ (knowledge).
※Before = Pro (πρό, Pro): A preposition meaning ‘before’, ‘in advance’, or ‘first’.
Meaning: It implies not only temporal precedence but also the ‘priority’ and ‘preparation’ preceding an event.
※Knowledge = Gnosis (γνῶσις, Gnosis): = Knowledge.
This signifies not merely knowing information but ‘deep insight and knowledge gained through experience’.
Root ‘ginōskō (γινώσκω)’: This verb is used in the Bible to express the relationship between husband and wife or the intimate relationship between God and the saints.
★The New Testament concept of ‘foreknowledge’ directly carries over Hebrew thinking.
The term “foreknowledge” (Greek προέγνω / προγινώσκω) used by Paul is a translation of the Hebrew concept ‘yada’.
Thus, the structure of Romans 8:29 becomes:
“Those whom God foreknew” = “Those whom God had already chosen through relationship”
★The relationship between Old Testament foreknowledge and New Testament foreknowledge
◎The Hebrew ‘yada’ hidden behind the Greek
When New Testament writers chose the word ‘gnosis’ (knowledge), they had the Old Testament ‘yada’ in mind.
1. Simple knowledge vs. experience: From the Hebrew perspective, to know is to touch, experience, and love directly.
2. Knowing as election: When God says in Amos 3:2, “I know you alone among all the families of the earth,”
this does not mean intellectual cognition but “I have specially chosen and loved only you.”
◎ The Hebrew Bible lacks an exact equivalent for the Greek προγινώσκω (to know beforehand).
In the Old Testament, “knowing” = yada is almost always expressed by a single verb.
1. The meaning of the three-letter root y-d-o (י-ד-ע) can be broken down as follows:
♠ Yod (י, Yod): Symbolizes ‘Hand’. This signifies action, power, possession, and means. That is, it denotes not merely intellectual knowledge, but practical work and intervention, like touching with one's hand.
♠Dalet (ד, Dalet): Symbolizes ‘Door’. It signifies passage, entry, and change. It represents the process of deeply entering into the innermost part of an object.
♠Ayin (ע, Ayin): Symbolizes ‘Eye’. It means to see, experience, and perceive.
The combined consonants ‘Yada’ signify not merely knowing as information, but
“a deep personal experience and choice, like seeing with the eye (Ayin), passing through the door and entering within (Dalet), and grasping with the hand (Yod).”
2. The Hebrew Principle Interpreted as 'Foreknowledge'
Because God is not bound by time, when the Old Testament expresses that God ‘knew’ someone,
it inherently includes the meaning of ‘foreknowledge’ and ‘election’.
Elective Love: In Jeremiah 1:5, when God says, “Before I formed you in the womb I knew you (yada),” this signifies that God established a personal relationship with Jeremiah and designated him for election
before his existence came into being.
Pre-established Plan: Since God sees the beginning and end of time simultaneously, in Hebrew thought, God's ‘knowing’
immediately leads to His ‘purpose and determination’ for the object.
3. When combined with a prefix meaning ‘before,’
to specifically emphasize temporal precedence,
words like ‘terem (טֶרֶם, Terem - before doing ~)’ or
‘lo (לֹא, Lo - when not yet ~)’ are used with ‘yada’ to complete the concept of 'knowing beforehand.'
Through the lens of Hebrew grammar, ‘knowing beforehand’ can be interpreted as:
"God's act of bringing us into the door of His heart, as if molding us with His own hands, even before the world was created,
determining to watch over us with loving eyes and form a deep relationship."
◎ Problems arising if ‘yada’ is translated as ‘foreknowledge’
Grammatically in Hebrew,
changing “God knew only you” to
“God knew what you would do” completely collapses the meaning.
The entire Bible would crumble.
★ Actual uses of yada (yadaim)
◎Genesis 4:1
“Adam knew (יָדַע) his wife Eve”
→ This signifies an intimate relationship, not mere knowledge.
Amos 3:2
“I have known (יָדַע) you alone of all the families of the earth”
→ This does not mean God was unaware of other nations, but signifies selective love and a covenantal relationship.
Genesis 18:19
“I have known him (יְדַעְתִּיו)…”
→This does not mean “observed him” but rather “chose him.”
◎Then where does ‘before’ come from?
In Hebrew, the concept of “before” does not appear as a separate temporal adverb.
Instead, its meaning is determined by context.
For example:
Before the foundation of the world
Before birth
Before deeds
But the nature of ‘knowing’ remains unchanged.
★ The Relationship Between the Pre-Existence Covenant and Foreknowledge
1️⃣ Pre-Existence Covenant
Ephesians 1:4–5
"He chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight.
In love he predestined us for adoption to himself as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will."
Key Point
Before the foundation of the world
In Christ
Before human actions
Based on God's will and pleasure
This is clearly not a choice made in response to actions within time.
2 Timothy 1:9
“God saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace. This grace was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.”
→ Grace itself is pre-established
Faith is not a condition of grace but its result.
Titus 1:2
"in hope of eternal life,
which God, who cannot lie, promised before the ages began."
→ The promise is already established = Covenant
1 Peter 1:20
“He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.”
→ Here, ‘foreknew (προεγνωσμένου)’ signifies not foreknowledge of events but covenantal designation.
2️⃣ So where does ‘foreknowledge’ fit?
Romans 8:29
“For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son.”
a. The Covenant Before Creation
God established His plan before the world was made.
Christ is the center of this covenant. That is, God did not choose us based on future actions, but planned to establish a relationship with us in Christ.
b. Foreknowledge (Relational Selection)
‘Foreknowledge’ does not simply mean predicting the future.
It means God had already chosen to enter into a relationship with us.
Therefore, we are included within God's covenant.
c. Predestination (Purpose Setting)
God planned for us to live according to certain goals and purposes within this chosen relationship.
For example, the purpose is a life becoming one with God and conforming to the image of Christ.
d. Calling (Historical Action)
Within history, we actually experience being called by God.
This is not the result of our prior choice or actions, but manifests as the outcome of being chosen within the relationship.
‘Foreknowledge’ is not information but relationship.
We are included in Christ, and those outside Christ are excluded.
That is, God’s basis for choosing us is because He established the covenant in Christ, not because of our future actions.
3️⃣ Reconnecting through Hebrew thought:
In Old Testament language:
יָדַע (yada) = to relate / to choose
Covenant = the formalization of a relationship
Thus, “God knew beforehand” means
“God had already placed them within a covenant relationship before the foundation of the world.”
Therefore, the Bible never states it this way:
❌ “Seeing that they would believe in the future”
❌ “Foreseeing their actions”
It always states it this way:
⭕ “In Christ”
⭕ “According to His own purpose”
⭕ “By grace”
4️⃣ The center of the pre-creation covenant is ‘Christ’
❌ God ↔ Human individual contract
⭕ Father ↔ Son (Christ) covenant
Galatians 3:16
“The promises were made to Abraham and his offspring... The offspring is Christ.”
We are not direct parties to the covenant but are included in Christ.
Therefore
Foreknowledge = Inclusion in Christ
Rejection = Being placed outside of Christ
(Summary)
Foreknowledge is God expressing the covenant established in Christ before the foundation of the world
in relational terms.
★Why did the evangelical interpretation arise?
The relationship between ‘foreknowledge’ and 'predestination'
Foreknowledge-predestination doctrine: This interpretation holds that God foreknew (foreknowledge) who would believe the gospel by free will,
and based on that faith, decided to save them (predestination).
It emphasizes human choice and responsibility.
This is not based on Scripture,
but stems from an intent to preserve human responsibility
and the philosophy that “God must be fair.”
Human-centered thinking premised on free will
This is a case where philosophy came first, not Scripture.
Conclusion
The Hebrew word ‘yada’
does not mean “to foresee the future,” but only “to choose based on relationship.”
Therefore,
the evangelical understanding of ‘foreknowledge = future foreseeing’ conflicts with the very linguistic structure of the Hebrew Bible.
